San Antonio Texas

san antonio around town Millions visit the city of San Antonio each year to experience a piece of Texas history or just to enjoy a relaxing stay. Native Americans first named the San Antonio River "Yanaguana", which means "clear waters" or "refreshing waters." The river, which winds through the center of San Antonio, provides both a scenic backdrop and a source of peace and tranquility.

One of the most distinctive areas of San Antonio is Riverwalk, a network of cobblestone and flagstone paths along the river in the center of San Antonio. Riverwalk extends for nearly three miles, on both sides of the river, from the King William Historic District in the south to the Municipal Auditorium and Conference Center in the north. Some sections are park-like, perfect for stopping to watch the world go by. Other areas feature shops, restaurants and nightspots. River cruises and water taxis are available for both sightseeing and transportation, and dinner cruises are a gorgeous way to spend an evening.

San Antonio has a rich history dating back to when Spanish missionaries founded the first mission along the river in 1718. The mission became known as the Alamo, where in 1836 a band of defenders fell after defending the city for 13 days against a vastly superior force. In modern days, San Antonio has become a military and educational center, with many military bases and a wealth of universities and colleges.
